How To Play Violin – The Bow

The violin would not exist but for the discovery of bowing. Individuals who do not play generally must learn how to play violin and ask why the left hand was chosen to try and do the intricate things whereas the correct hand simply pushes a stick to some horsehair on it up and down. It could stem from the notion that the left hand is ‘creating the notes’; televised footage of soloists enhance this view. Richard Wilson relates that when he was a viola student at the Guildhall College of Music, he had a poor instrument and despaired of producing a cheap sound.  William Primrose visited the School and, to illustrate one thing during a seminar, picked up this viola and played.
