Check Engine Light Warning And Why You Care
January 20, 2010 on 6:14 am | By admin | In Autos | Comments OffThe check engine light is a warning light that tells the driver of an automobile that something is wrong. Modern vehicles have a computerized system in the engine. This system controls the engine and transmission and ensures that the automobile is running with top efficiency and low emission. The computer system can assess whether there is something wrong with the functioning of the engine. When the computer senses that some part of the automobile is not functioning correctly it immediately switches the check engine light on. The check engine light is no reason to panic but it is reason for the driver to get the automobile professionally checked as soon as possible. Drivers do not have to pull over and call a tow truck when the check engine light comes on. They should however go to the nearest dealer or technician as soon as possible to get the problem diagnosed and fixed after the alert by the check engine light. The technician will hook a scanner to the computer and read the code of the malfunctioning part. The manual of the car will have the list of codes and the technician will diagnose the problem and perform repairs based on the code of the malfunctioning part of the engine. Once the problem is fixed the check engine light will stop flashing. A certified technician will do a better job of repairing the malfunctioning part than a do it yourself job. Often the check engine light will continue to flash after drivers attempt to repair the car themselves. Experts at the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence advise that the only way to stop the check engine light from flashing is to get a professional diagnostic scan done at a reputed dealer or service centre to prevent permanent damage and expensive repairs for the automobile.
