How to fix the unmountable boot volume blue screen?

You may have encountered the error unmountable boot volume blue screen on a blue screen while working on win XP. This is most likely because your boot.ini file is messed up. What you need to do is to boot to the XP cd and when you see the Welcome screen, press the letter R to enter the dos prompt. Then type “chkdsk  /p” (without the quotes). After that is done, type “fixboot” (again without the quotes) and hit enter “Y” and enter at the prompt. Then type “exit”. The system will now reboot into Windows

If for some reason you still encounter the error unmountable boot volume on a blue screen, boot to the recovery console in the same way as above. But this time type “chkdsk  /r” (note the difference is ‘r’ instead of ‘p’) then enter. When done, type “exit” and hit enter. Note that this will take longer, but it should work.
