Health giving sun

So what is it about the sun that is so darn important to our bodies?  Some sun exposure can improve your health if kept to a maximum of about 15 minutes a day is what I hear these days.  It seems that sun exposure at this level helps our bodies with vitamin D processing.  Although some folks like an old friend of mine have the vampire disease.  He is not allowed any sun exposure to his skin or he gets a really bad rash.  He always has to wear a big, floppy hat when he goes outside.  I feel sorry for him.
