The reason for this is that in the case of the very young, their immune systems are still developing, in the case of the very old, their immune systems are failing. That is where bacteria like listeria does the most damage. In a healthy person, they might experience symptoms associated with the flu. However, with the very old or very young, it can cause death or severe illness.
