Immigration Status Checks

Currently there is an electronic program that allows businesses to check the immigration status of their employees. The program is supported by the Department of Homeland Security, and the department has decided to give a “stamp of approval” to companies who volunteer to do the checks. Right now the electronic system is optional and under development, companies are only required to do a paper system by law, and only about 2.5% of employers use it. One of the organizations weighing in on these measures is the Federation for American Immigration Reform who support measures to limit illegal immigration. On the other side of the issue are the farmers who hire the immigrants, saying that it is hard to find a legal workforce to hire.
